PET vs. CT vs. MRI: What’s the Difference and Why PET Imaging Matters

Medical imaging plays a critical role in diagnosis and treatment planning, but not all scans provide the same information. CT and MRI scans focus on the structure of the body, while PET imaging shows how tissues and organs are functioning at a cellular level.

A PET scan helps doctors:

  • Detect cancer earlier
  • Determine if cancer has spread
  • Evaluate how well treatment is working
  • Identify recurrence sooner

Because PET imaging looks at metabolic activity, it can reveal changes before they are visible on other imaging studies. This allows physicians to make more informed decisions and tailor treatment more precisely. PET scans are often combined with CT to give both functional and structural detail in one exam.

PET imaging provides an added layer of insight that supports faster, more accurate diagnosis and care planning.
